Your Bjjgi and You: A Friendly Chat About Fit and Fabric

Pull up a chair. You signed up for your first class, or maybe you are thinking about it, and now there is this big question hanging over you: what am I even supposed to wear? Many people type it into a search bar as one word, like bjjgi, and hope for a simple answer. Good news. We can talk it through together, the way you would with a friendly teammate before class. A bjjgi is the uniform used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It looks like a heavy jacket and pants, and it comes with a belt. Below are the questions most new students whisper to themselves, with answers in plain words.

Wait, Is This Really a Uniform?

Yes, and it is simpler than it looks. A gi comes in three pieces that work together.

The Jacket

The jacket is the star. It is thick, strong, and made to be grabbed. In class, you and your partner will hold each other’s sleeves and collars all the time. That is how many of the moves work, so the jacket has to take a beating.

The Pants

The pants are loose enough for you to squat, kneel, and roll. Ours are ripstop, which means extra threads are woven into the cloth so a small tear does not spread.

The Belt

The belt holds your jacket closed and shows your rank. Most new students start with a white one. It is a small thing, but putting it on for the first time feels pretty good.

Why Is It So Thick?

The first time you pick up a gi, it can feel like a winter coat. That is on purpose.

Thick Cloth Means Long Life

Every class tugs and twists the cloth. Thin fabric gives up quickly. Our men’s jacket is a 450GSM pearl weave. GSM stands for grams per square meter, and it tells you how heavy the cloth is. Heavier cloth usually lasts longer, while lighter cloth runs cooler.

A Stiff Collar Is a Good Sign

The collar is the part partners grab most. A floppy collar folds and slips. A stiff, thick one holds its shape. Ours is built that way, with reinforced stitching in the spots that get rubbed the most.

Do Not Worry About the Stiffness

A new gi feels like cardboard for the first few classes. Give it a few washes and some time on the mat, and it softens up.

How Do I Know It Fits?

This is the question that keeps people up at night. Take a breath. You can check the fit with a few easy steps.

Start With the Size Chart

Do not guess from your shirt size. Use your height and weight and compare them with the chart. Our men’s sizes run from A00 to A6, with extra choices marked L and H for different builds. Custom sizing is also offered for people who sit between sizes.

Look at the Sleeves and Pants

With your arms out, the sleeves should end near your wrists. The pants should land close to your ankles. If the sleeves cover your knuckles, they will be easy for a partner to grab.

Test Your Range

Sit in a deep squat. Raise your arms over your head. If the jacket rides up or the pants pinch, try a different size.

What About Shrinking?

Some cloth gets smaller in the wash. The fabric on our gis is pre-shrunk, so it is made to keep the size you pick.

What Else Goes in the Bag?

A gi is only the beginning. Over time, your bag will fill with a few friends. The good news is that you do not need to rush. Start with a belt, a mouthguard, and sandals for walking off the mat. Add a towel and a water bottle. Later on, you can grow your bjj equipment slowly, one piece at a time. Our shop carries a full range of bjj equipment for men, women, and kids, including rash guards, grappling shorts, and spats for no-gi classes.

A Tip on Shorts

Grappling shorts should have no zippers or pockets. Both can catch on a partner during a roll.

A Note for Teams

If you coach or run a club, custom gear lets everyone match in the same colors and logos. Wholesale pricing is also available for bigger orders.

Will It Fall Apart in the Wash?

Not if you treat it kindly. A few easy habits do most of the work.

The Gentle Way

Use cold water, under about 30°C (86°F), and a mild soap. Skip bleach and fabric softener, since both weaken the fibers. Wash the gi separately from colored clothes so no color rubs off.

The Open-Air Way

Let your gi dry in open air, out of harsh sun. A dryer on the lowest setting works in a pinch, but heat is the enemy of good cloth.

The Habits Nobody Mentions

Take your gi out of your bag the moment you get home. A damp gi in a closed bag becomes a smell problem fast. Wash it when it needs it, since too many cycles wear the cloth. And once in a while, check the collar, knees, and cuffs for loose threads.

Can I Wear Any Color I Want?

Maybe. It depends on your gym.

White, blue, and black are the colors most gyms and events accept. Our men’s range also comes in brown, green, navy blue, and yellow. Before you fall in love with a shade, ask your coach what the gym allows.

Color does not change how well you roll. It only changes how you look and whether a rule gets in your way. If you plan to compete, check the event rules. Our grey gi listing says it is IBJJF standard-compliant, and each listing has its own notes.

How Long Until I Stop Feeling Silly?

Here is the honest answer. Probably about three classes.

The first day, you will feel like a kid in a costume. The second day, you will trip over your belt. By the third class, something shifts. You stop noticing the gi because you are too busy figuring out how to escape a hold. After a few weeks, it feels like a second set of clothes.

If you feel awkward, you are in good company. Every black belt in your gym once tied a belt wrong and apologized to a partner for it.

How Much Will It Cost, and How Long Will I Wait?

Let us talk about the practical stuff.

The Price

Our men’s gis run from $79 to $109, depending on size. The listing for our grey gi has shown a price from $79, down from $90, and many listings include a free gi bag and belt while supplies last. It also shows a 4.8 rating across 46 reviews. One customer said shipping was a little slow, so give yourself some extra time.

The Wait

We ship inside the United States. Regular orders usually go out in about five to seven days, and custom gear takes around one to two weeks. Orders of $300 or more ship free, and you get a tracking number once your package is on its way.

If Something Goes Wrong

Regular items can be returned under our refund policy, which lists the time limit and valid reasons. Custom gear cannot be returned, so measure twice. Our support team is available 12 hours a day, six days a week, at support@bjiujitsu.com.

A Last Word Before You Roll

If you remember one thing, make it this: the best bjjgi is the one that lets you forget about your clothes and think about your training. Check the size chart, ask your coach about colors, wash it gently, and give yourself a few classes to settle in. Everyone has stood where you are now, nervous and curious, belt in hand. You are going to be fine. See you on the mat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a BJJ gi and a karate gi?

A BJJ gi is thicker, cut closer, and built for hard grips and ground work. It has a stiff collar and reinforced stitching. A karate uniform is lighter and looser.

What does A2 or A3 mean in gi sizing?

The A numbers are a common sizing scale for grappling gis. Higher numbers fit bigger bodies. Our men’s sizes run from A00 to A6, with extra choices marked L and H. Always check the chart for your height and weight.

Are BJJ gis unisex?

Not usually. Men’s and women’s bodies are shaped differently, so our shop has separate ranges for men, women, and kids to give each student a better fit.

Do I need a gi for no-gi classes?

No. No-gi classes use a rash guard, grappling shorts, or spats instead. You can start with the gi and add no-gi pieces later.

What is a pearl weave?

Pearl weave is a way of knitting the cloth that balances strength and weight. Our men’s jacket uses a 450 GSM pearl weave, which is firm and lasting without feeling like a winter coat.
